My Story

My name is Kara, and I just celebrated my 30th birthday. I’m a middle school social studies teacher outside of Boston and “mom” to my dachshund Benny and tabby cat Bailey. I love art, museums, baking, yoga and animals. I also love my job because I can share my passion for history with dozens of 12-to-13 year old every year.

When I was 14, I was diagnosed with kidney disease, and now I need a kidney transplant. My dream is to receive a transplant from a living donor while I am still relatively healthy and before I need to go on dialysis.

KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION
Many people know about transplants using organs from deceased donors. Because the need is so great, there are currently more than 120,000 people in the U.S. on the kidney transplant waiting list. At my transplant hospital, Massachusetts General in Boston, my estimated waiting time for a deceased donor kidney is five to seven years.

Fortunately, kidneys for transplantation also may be obtained from living donors. While donating a kidney is a major medical procedure, people live full and normal lives with one kidney. And, for those in need of a kidney, like me, a living donor transplant is significantly more likely to work better and last longer. My transplant nephrologist says a living donor kidney is the best option for me.

You’ve probably also heard of people with kidney disease going on dialysis, a procedure to filter their blood to remove toxins that their failing kidneys can’t handle. While dialysis has helped millions of people, it’s not a cure or even a long-term solution. Dialysis is extremely hard on the body, can cause serious medical issues and requires being connected to a dialysis machine many hours a day three times a week. A typical patient on dialysis survives only five years.

One of my biggest fears is going on dialysis and having to give up not just my independence but also my teaching.

HOW DID I GET THE DISEASE?

During childhood, my body’s autoimmune response went into overdrive and caused extensive scarring in my kidneys. For years, my kidneys had to work extra hard to keep my blood filtered, but now my kidneys are, in effect, worn out from overwork.

There is some good news: My most recent kidney biopsy confirmed the autoimmune response that damaged my kidneys is no longer active. This means I have a good prognosis for a positive outcome from a kidney transplant.

WHY I'M READY FOR A TRANSPLANT NOW!

I became medically eligible for a kidney transplant in early December 2015. When I heard this, my primary emotion wasn’t fear; it was relief. For years, I have been in limbo—sick, fatigued and exhausted but not yet eligible for a transplant. Now I have a clear path forward to have the life I want to live. And I want to move forward as soon as possible—while I’m as healthy as I can be going into the procedure.

I’m very excited about my post-transplant life. I know there still will be many challenges, but I look forward to having more energy and putting that energy to good use—in the classroom, of course—but also being able to participate fully in family activities and other things I’ve had to give up, like swimming and running, because of the overwhelming exhaustion of kidney disease. And, it’s my goal to give back to the kidney community, too. I’m especially interested in using my teaching skills and love of children to serve as a mentor to teens and young people who are traveling the difficult road to transplantation. By sharing experiences, I believe I can diminish the fear they live with daily and give them hope that they, too, will have a better tomorrow. Because, if I’ve learned anything through this long journey of illness, it’s the power of hope.

I know I’m asking a lot of my family, friends and Good Samaritans to consider giving me a kidney. Please know I’m not making this request lightly. It’s difficult to contemplate another person going through so much to give me a quality of life I haven’t known for years and, in fact, can barely remember. Yet, I am so determined to overcome my disease and lead a passionate, productive and wonderful life that I’m willing to ask humbly and with gratitude for your help.
