Some of the PPI, s on the market include Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and Aciphex. I am personally taking Prilosec (Omeprazole) for my own acid reflux disease and find that taking one tablet in the morning is adequate to last me until the next day.

Prevention is better than cure, so the saying goes. So if you have heartburn symptoms you should start practicing some lifestyle changes before it starts giving you GERD complications. By changing your eating habits, small changes to your diet, and altering your sleeping position you may just do enough to stop that first acid reflux symptom happening

The same was true for avoiding food late at night and sleeping on your left side. Different things trigger GERD in different people and if by eating certain foods or drinking certain beverages the symptoms of acid reflux got worse then it is probably best to avoid these items. Perhaps you have been taking far too many antacids these days and you are wondering if there is possibly an alternative to popping the fat little white pills to solve your heartburn problem. Indeed, there is a much more sensible solution to acid reflux/heartburn, and it all starts with what you eat.There is good acid reflux food which will help prevent heartburn and there is bad which will exasperate the situation.

People are not born with acid reflux; this condition occurs as a result of lifestyle choices including - diet, exercise, and stress levels. So, it does stand to reason that if diet is one of the causes of acid reflux, then it is more than likely that choosing your foods wisely can also alleviate it as well.

What acid reflux food you must not eat.

In order to reduce or eliminate acid reflux you are going to want to stay clear of fatty and acid reflux foods in general, as these tend to increase acid secretion for digestion. For example, you’ll want to steer clear of all citrus fruits (and juices) like oranges, lemons, and tomatoes.

The esophagus is the linking passage between the throat and the stomach; it is a muscular tube that passes food from the mouth to the stomach. The inner lining of the esophagus is called the mucosa; the surface is smooth and covered with cells called epithelial cells. The outer layer is called muscularis extrema and consists of strong muscle.

How does the esophagus work and why does acid cause reflux?

The stomach is designed to handle the hydrochloric acid that it produces but the esophagus is not made of the same material and will burn when exposed to the acid. When you have heartburn it is not a serious issue if it happens infrequently. But when heartburn strikes more than a couple of times per week it is more likely to have be acid reflux disease which is a very debilitating disease. If left unattended the esophagus will become scarred or ulcerated due to the burning and it can even lead to cancer of the esophagus.

The LES

The LES normally opens when it receives signals to allow food to pass then closes tightly shut to stop any acid reflux. Some times the pressure excreted by the LES decreases or relaxes and if you have gas in the stomach the pressure of this is sometimes great enough to force the valve open and allow acid to reflux into the esophagus. This relaxation of the LES is called transient LES relaxations, and the frequency of them varies from person to person. For someone with acid reflux disease (GERD) these relaxations often happen a lot more frequently than in someone who does not suffer from the disease, although no one really knows why this happens.

There is another way that makes acid cause reflux. There are certain conditions that can effect the relaxation of the LES one is pregnancy. In pregnancy heartburn is more prevalent because it is thought that a change in the hormones relaxes muscles of the LES while a growing fetus increases pressure in the abdomen. Certain foods will also cause the muscle to relax, as does alcohol and smoking.

Another problem is abnormally weak contractions of the LES which reduces its ability to prevent reflux. When the LES is too relaxed it allows stomach acid to creep back into the esophagus.

Hiatal hernias also contribute to GERD because they can prevent the valve from closing properly or can weaken the valve contractions.

Another cause is if the esophageal contractions (peristalsis) are weak or defective and any acid reflux is not pushed back into the stomach. This may happen if the waves of contractions from peristalsis do not happen when we swallow or the waves die out before the contents of the esophagus are pushed into the stomach.

One more thing that can put pressure on the LES is slow emptying of the stomach. If the stomach empties abnormally slowly the distension of the stomach after meals is prolonged therefore the chance of acid reflux happening is also more likely.

Two types of anise that should not be taken are star anise and caraway. Use only ash coloured green anise, sweet anise or European anise in the herbal mixture.

Mix together equal amounts of the three ingredients. Take one tea spoon of the herbal mixture and pour 2 to 3 cups of boiled water into the mixture. Let the tea sit for up to 5 minutes and then strain the mixture. Drink up t 8oz of the mixture in the morning and the same in the evening. You can add honey to taste if you want.

One other recipe is using slippery elm, mace and nutmeg: - these three items are notorious in fighting stomach complaints.

Slippery Elm bark is one of the most effective herbs for reducing stomach pain and irritation it protects, and coats the mucus membranes of the stomach and intestinal tract. Not only does it help to absorb excess stomach acid and help it mix better with food, it soothes and heals irritation along the entire digestive tract.

Use a pinch of nutmeg and mace with one teaspoon of slippery elm. Mix with water to make a paste. Boil 11/2 pints of water and add it to the paste. Mix and let cool. Drink about ½ a cup at a time.

Taking medication for acid stomach will stop the pain and give your esophagus time to heal if the lining has been damaged by acid, and this is great over a short period. But having GERD usually means it’s for life and taking the medication over a long period can have problems that are far greater than GERD.

The stomach controls its own environment

It will change the stomach acid strength to suit. I.e. it will secrete a lot more acid if you have a large meal to aid digestion than if you just had a smack.

Acid stomach occurs by eating the wrong food, rushing our meals or not chewing it will upset the balance of the stomach acid produced and unbalances the function of the valves which control the movement of food in and out of the stomach.

The stomach works normally when a ph of approximately 3-4 is reached. Ph is measured by the amount of acid or alkaline in the stomach. A low reading 1-3 is acidic while a reading of 6-8 is alkaline. If the ph level is above 3 this usually starts the digestion process. The higher ph level triggers cells called g cells to release a hormone called Gastrin. It is the Gastrin that controls the amount of stomach acid released. The Gastrin hormone then triggers other cells in the stomach lining called parietal cells to secrete Hcl into the stomach. At the same time it also triggers the release of digestive enzymes the main one being Pepsin. It is the Pepsin that breaks down the food in the stomach and its ideal working environment is in the hcl produced by the stomach.

When the ph reaches below 3 this signals the stomach to decrease or stop producing Gastrin. This digestive process breaks down our food and turns it into the energy our bodies require. The Gastrin also stimulates the stomach muscles which contract to send any food product into the duodenum and on to the small intestine for further processing. If this process is broken then it can result in acid stomach.

What happens when you take acid reflux medication?

Heartburn medication When you take medication for acid reflux like Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI, s) you are reducing or in some cases stopping the production of hcl. This causes imbalance in the stomach and it tries to compensate by signaling that more Gastrin is needed to produce more hcl, the G cells believe there is not enough hcl in the stomach and overcompensate. Because the production of hcl is blocked the levels of Gastrin start to rise.

It has been measured that patients that take the PPI Omeprazole (the same drug that I take myself) is 2 to 4 times higher than the baseline figures after only 2-4 months.

Producing high levels of Gastrin can lead to a condition called hypergastrinemia. This is a well-recognized cause of a disease known as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare disorder that causes tumors in the pancreas and duodenum and ulcers in the stomach and duodenum. Up to half of these tumors can be malignant and lead to stomach cancer. Therefore long term use can put some people at risk of stomach cancer even though your acid stomach is better.

The medical community offers many theories but still arguments wage on about what causes heartburn during pregnancy.

Hormones as a cause of acid reflux

One of the theories is that early heartburn in pregnancy is due to changing levels of the hormone progesterone which causes changes in the body, aiding in relaxation of the Lower esophageal sphincter LES for short. The LES is a ring of muscle which opens to allow food to pass into the stomach but stays firmly shut to normally stop acid from the stomach returning to the esophagus which causes the heartburn. When this ring of muscle becomes relaxed as is the case during pregnancy it allows the return of stomach contents including acid into the esophagus.

A growing and developing baby starts to take up space. As the foetus develops the female body has to change to accommodate it. Some organs become slightly displaced and put greater pressure on the stomach. This extra pressure is also felt on the LES and it can result in stomach acid being forced back into the esophagus causing acid reflux. So during the nine months of pregnancy the situation gets worse as the baby grows leading to more severe acid reflux symptoms.

Habits and lifestyle choices change and some of these changes are bad for reflux. Wearing clothing that is too tight at the waist, eating large meals especially before lying down, and unusual food choices all add to reflux.

Ways to relieve heartburn

Eating smaller meals, not lying down right after eating, and not wearing clothing that is tight around the waist all help.

Usually things like spicy foods, chocolate and citrus fruits should be avoided although this can differ with each individual and a little trial and error by noting which foods you have eaten when heartburn strike can help somewhat.

Perhaps the most important change is to change ones sleeping position and simply use gravity to keep acid down. Positional therapy at night is usually recommended. Sleeping on a wedge that supports the entire torso in an elevated position can greatly reduce the risk of night time acid reflux. Also, many physicians recommend sleeping on the left side. This position reduces pressure on certain arteries and also reduces pressure on the liver which is on the right side of the upper abdomen.

Another great way and probably the easiest for someone who is pregnant is an electric adjustable bed, where the sleeping position can be adjusted at the touch of a button, giving the flexibility needed to maintain the correct elevated position to relieve acid reflux

Heartburn And Acid Reflux, My Story

Heartburn, acid reflux and hiatus hernia my story

This is my personal experience of having acid reflux disease and a hiatus hernia. And the reasons for my search for help with information on the symptoms and cures for heartburn.

I am one of those unfortunate people that have a dreadful time with acid reflux.

Do you wake up in the middle of the night feeling that half the contents of your stomach are sitting in your throat…I do.

I was not enjoying my food as I new the outcome was lots of pain and suffering. Acid reflux food Eating and drinking became something to dread not the joy it should be.

When I first noticed that I was getting heartburn more and more frequently, I went to see my GP and was prescribed the usual antacids. They worked fine for a while but then I was finding that I needed them more and more often. I was also finding I was feeling very full after eating or when I had a few drinks. I felt as though my food was more in my throat than my stomach. Also if I happened to lie down soon after a meal, which is something I used to love doing, I would get intense burning in my throat.

After several more visits to my Doctor without much improvement he suggested that I should have an endoscopy.

Hiatus Hernia diagnosis

Endoscopy is a procedure where a camera is inserted down your throat into your stomach allowing the Doctor to see the oesophagus and stomach. This allowed them to diagnose that I had a Hiatus hernia. (What’s this you may ask? I did)

This is a condition in which part of the stomach slides above the diaphragm and into the chest. There is a valve like flap at the bottom of the esophagus which separates the esophagus from your stomach. In my case the valve was distorted by the hernia. When you eat the valve opens to allow your food into your stomach but then stays firmly shut to stop the food coming back up, but the hiatus hernia seems to stop the valve closing properly and allows the contents of your stomach to come back up.(Reflux )

I also found out that your stomach is full of acid to aid in digestion and that although your stomach is protected from the acid. Your esophagus is not….. This means that any content coming back into your esophagus can literally burn it. This is called acid reflux or the really technical name is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD for short.

Having a Hiatus Hernia seemed bad enough, but having the acid reflux can be a nightmare.

However the good news was that after my diagnosis I was put on an acid suppressant called Omeprazole. This must be one of the best acid reflux medications on the market in my opinion. This absolutely changed my life (for the better). Although I was not supposed to, I found that I could eat and drink more or less whatever I liked and I did not get the massive bouts of pain from acid reflux.

cure acid reflux At the time of my diagnosis I was working abroad and luckily received the treatment quickly. The tablets were working perfectly so I thought no more about it. I just took my daily Omeprazole table and carried on happily.

Doctors Dilemma

However I recently returned to the UK and on registering with a new doctor I was asked how long I had been taking the Omeprazole. When I told him six years he immediately cut my dose from 20 mg to 10 mg and said I should only be on a low maintenance dose because of side effects. I did not know what side effects these were but started taking the reduced dose as advised.

Virtually straight away all my old symptoms came back. The smaller dose just does not seem to be enough to keep the acid reflux at bay and still have the lifestyle I have been accustomed to. It seems as though I will have to change my lifestyle if I am to stay on the smaller doze of Omeprazole.

This was the reason for my starting research into alternative treatments and diets.

I have already found plenty of articles on the subject and so I thought I would make my first venture on the internet and put any relevant information I find useful or I want to comment on here on my site. Hopefully helping other people with the same problems as well as helping myself.

Acid Reflux Disease Symptoms, Cause and Treatment.

Acid reflux is the common term for gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, the condition of abnormal reflux that causes mucosal damages (damage to the esophageal lining). This disease can affect both adults and children or infants, but people with a high vulnerability are pregnant women, smokers and people who lie down and sleep directly after eating.

Acid reflux disease symptoms are as follows: heartburn is the main symptom, which is characterized by chest pain; inflammation in the esophageal lining; difficulty in swallowing; cough and hoarseness. These symptoms are felt by people with GERD after eating a fatty meal or drinking liquor, when bending and worse when the sufferer is a smoker.

Acid reflux causes
Acid reflux is primarily caused by the malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Either by unnatural or weak muscle contractions of the LES or abnormal relaxation of the LES muscles which is called transient LES contractions. The LES being a ring of muscle that acts like a valve between the stomach and the esophagus. In other cases, it can also be brought about by the abnormal production of gastric acids. Also if there is insufficient supply of stomach acid, the valve in the lower stomach responsible for digested foods containing stomach acid entering the intestine does not open up. This allows stomach contents to either stay in the stomach or enter the esophagus. This irritates the esophagus lining and leads to inflammation, which is heartburn.

Some of the factors that can trigger acid reflux are Hiatus Hernia which stops the LES from closing properly, Zollinger-elison syndrome a rare disorder that causes tumors in the pancreas and duodenum and ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, Hypercalcemia a raised level of calcium in the blood, Scleroderma systemic sclerosis a rare, progressive connective tissue disorder involving thickening and hardening of the skin and connective tissue.

According to some beliefs, drinking alcohol, tea and coffee can lead to gastro esophageal reflux. But recent studies show that although individuals already affected by this disease can be aggravated by alcohol, tea and coffee, these elements do not cause the disease. Compared to smoking which amplifies the risks of getting the disease, alcohol, tea and coffee had the least impact. But this doesn’t mean that GERD infected people are free to take the beverages stated above. Doctors still suggest avoiding drinking of alcohol in order to avoid further aggravation.

Smoking is one of the chief culprits that cause acid reflux disease. Regular smokers for twenty years are 70% more susceptible to acid reflux disease than non-smokers. And acid reflux disease symptoms of those who already developed GERD are worsened day by day due to smoking.

One highlight of the research is eating large amounts of salt with our food are found to be equivalent to regular smoking in terms of the risk of developing GERD. It is not common knowledge that table salt can cause acid reflux disease but researchers found out in their studies that people who are heavy salt users have a 70% risk of contacting gastro- esophageal reflux disease. Gastroenterologists of New York University Medical Center attested this fact.

GERD Treatment
Gastroesophageal reflux disease can be self diagnosed. If you have heartburn or more that say twice a week or any other symptoms already mentioned it is advisable to seek medical advice and to have tests to enable the doctor to diagnose what possible treatment is required. The disease can be treated in a variety of ways. It can be alleviated by prescribed drugs such as antacids, by natural way such as change of diet, elevation of the torso and head when lying down, or the last option is surgery. And of course lifestyle changes like avoid smoking and drinking alcohol will help enormously.

Acid Reflux Disease is not as ominous as it sounds, unless you are indeed a chronic sufferer that’s only recently found it necessary to try every over the counter heartburn product available. For many people what started as little bouts of heartburn every now and then, grows into more frequent trips to the drug store and before you know it you’re making an appointment with a doctor because you just don’t know what t do next.
